Organic & Biodynamic Wine

Organic farming means the vineyard is worked without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers. Biodynamic goes further: the estate is treated as one living organism, with composts and plant preparations in place of chemistry, and the vineyard work timed to the calendar.

Neither is a flavour, and neither is a promise of quality on its own. What they reliably tell you is that somebody is out in the rows doing the work by hand — and in practice, the growers who farm this way tend to be the ones paying the closest attention to everything else as well. That is why so many of the wines we are proudest of end up on this page.

• Loire: Vincent Gaudry (Sancerre), Jean Teiller (Menetou-Salon, certified organic), Bernard Baudry (Chinon), Guiberteau (Saumur), Thierry Germain at Roches Neuves (Saumur-Champigny), Huet (Vouvray).
• Burgundy & Beaujolais: Domaine Trapet (Gevrey-Chambertin), Comte Armand (Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Épeneaux), Domaine Sauzet (Puligny-Montrachet), the Héritiers du Comte Lafon (Mâconnais), Jean Foillard (Morgon).
• Rhône & the south: Château de Beaucastel (Châteauneuf-du-Pape), David Reynaud (Crozes-Hermitage), Clos Marie (Pic Saint-Loup), Léon Barral (Faugères), Domaine de La Marfée (Languedoc), Domaine Gauby (Roussillon), Domaines Ott and Miraval in Provence.
• Champagne: Eric Rodez, grower in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay.

How this page is built — and what we will not do

A wine appears here only when the estate’s own farming is organic or biodynamic and we say so on the wine’s own product page. We do not add a bottle to this list on reputation, on rumour, or because a producer is fashionable. If the claim is not on the product page, the wine is not on this page.
